Two Purple Turnips For Me Please!

Baby A and Baby B, who we still affectionately refer to as “Double Trouble” (until they no longer warrant that name!) are now the size of turnips at 17 weeks. Since we learned last week that they are both girls, we prefer purple turnips, not green ones! Last week I mentioned that the babies on average would weigh between 3-5 ounces each, but we found out that Baby A weighed in at 5 ounces exactly and Baby B weighed in at 4.76 ounces. This week they are supposed to reach a full 5 ounces, but it makes me wonder if they are both a little more than 5 ounces since we know Baby A reached that already last week and B was so close! Each baby is about 5 inches in length (and if the babies could stretch out all the way, they would be 9 inches long!!!). Depending on your hand size, that might stretch as long as your palm. For me, 5 inches measures from the tip of my pinky just to about the base of my wrist! When I thought about having two of those side by side in my belly—I got pretty excited!!! This week I had some fun at work and put the babies on the twin heart monitors and I could see and hear their hearts ticking away at the same time. I have to admit, I’m a little spoiled since I get so many ultrasounds and can listen to their heartbeats at workJ
This week, each baby is starting to get a little bit of body fat (whoo hoo…they need to catch up to me!). They also are starting to make their own very first stool, known as meconium. Oh, Jay is going to have so much fun trying to wipe that tar-like substance off their butts-I can only imagine!! Their skeletal bones continue to develop from cartilage into bones this week as well. They also are continuing on perfecting some important reflexes such as sucking and swallowing. Lastly, the umbilical cord is growing thicker and stronger and works hard to bring nutrients to the babies and removing wastes.
I’m reading though “What to Expect When You are Expecting Book” (which was a gift from my friend Megan—Thanks Megan!), and I sort of chuckled when I read that at this stage the uterus is the size of a small melon and that at this point I might begin to outgrow my clothes….Really—I outgrew my clothes at 7 weeks!!! I don’t have a small melon anymore; I have more of a watermelon sized belly!! I think the authors should have a multiple pregnancy comparison—boy that would be more helpful!
Well, I’ve been off the Zofran pump for 9 days now, but who is counting?! It has not been an easy ride since then and yesterday was probably one of my worst days in 2 weeks, but I’ll continue to battle through this and see if I can just survive on the oral medication around the clock. Just like before, I have to take it one day at a time, and if worse came to worse, I know by Thanksgiving it will all be behind me!
Jay and I are working on pulling together ideas for the baby room and we are so excited for these precious babies. We decided on a non-traditional nursery. The nursery will be black and white with pink accents. The main patterns are black damask on white and very pale pink polka dots on black. Everything will be custom made and I think it is going to be pretty stunning. Jay picked out a beautiful black and white tree with pale pink flowers and butterflies that will overstretch one of the dressers as well. And with me…It should be obvious that a person who loved pink for many years, will have pink walls for the girls nursery. I can’t wait until it all comes together. Once we get closer to a finished product (which probably won’t be until October –November) I’ll have to post pictures. See you all next week (with ultrasound pictures we hope!).
